Theresa Cummins: A Quarter Century of Care

Tess taking a quick break from caring for the residents of Grantham Green.

Theresa “Tess” Cummins has been a cornerstone of Doutta Galla Aged Services for 25 remarkable years, dedicating her life to caring for residents at Grantham Green. Her journey into aged care began somewhat serendipitously when her aunt, who was already working at the Home, suggested she apply for a job. Tess recalls, “My son was playing football on a Sunday in the under-teens, and my aunt rang me and said, ‘Tess, would you like a job where I work?’ I thought, alright, why not?” The process was as simple as it was swift—she went in the next day and started working immediately, with no need for the formal certifications that are required today. “I came in with my resume, but they didn’t even ask for it. I started the next day, and I’m still here,” Tess laughs.

When Tess first started, the organisation was not yet known as Doutta Galla Aged Services but operated under the name Western Aged Care Services. The structure was quite different back then, with Grantham Green being one of three facilities under the Western Aged Care umbrella, along with Burnside and Howard Kingham. At that time, Grantham Green was divided into four houses, and each house had a single carer responsible for ten residents. “We did everything,” Tess shared, reminiscing about how she would not only care for the residents’ physical needs but also cook their meals, manage their medications, clean their rooms, and even do their laundry. The work was demanding, but it was a simpler time when the bond between carers and residents was profoundly personal.

Reflecting on the changes over the years, Tess notes how different things are today. The all-encompassing role she once held has become more specialised, with chefs, cleaners, and laundry staff taking over many of the tasks she once performed alone. “It’s quite different now,” she says, noting that the introduction of more specialised roles has allowed for a more structured approach to resident care.

Despite the changes in the industry, Tess’s commitment to her residents has remained. Her days start early at 7 AM, and she doesn’t stop running until her shift ends. In fact, Tess arrives to work an hour early every day to make sure she’s fully prepared and to complete a thorough handover. She believes this extra time helps her start the day on the right foot, ensuring that all residents receive the best care possible.

From assisting with showers to ensuring rooms are neat and tidy, her work is nonstop. But Tess goes beyond just completing her tasks—she makes it a point to brighten the lives of those she cares for. Whether it’s engaging in a friendly wager with a resident over a football game or dancing along to music in a resident’s room, Tess brings a warmth and joy that transforms the everyday.

Over the years, Tess has seen many changes in the aged care sector, particularly in the level of care required as residents’ needs have become more complex. Yet, she continues to love every moment of her job. “I love helping the residents, and I enjoy the staff. It’s very rewarding to know you’re helping someone every day,” Tess explains. Her dedication and passion for her work are evident, making her an invaluable part of the Doutta Galla community.
